A Personal Journey Of A Hindu Seeking Happiness
Having delved into the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, and the Quran, I shifted my focus to the Japji Sahib, a profound composition found in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. Despite its brevity, the Japji Sahib offers profound insights into the pursuit of happiness, presenting a unique perspective that resonated deeply with me.
The central theme of the Japji Sahib is the concept of living in harmony with the divine order, or Hukam. Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, teaches that true happiness arises from aligning one’s will with the divine will and accepting the natural flow of life with humility and grace. By surrendering to the Hukam, individuals can find peace and contentment amidst life’s challenges and uncertainties.
The Japji Sahib emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and spiritual discipline in the pursuit of happiness. Through meditation, self-reflection, and adherence to righteous conduct, individuals can cultivate a deeper connection with the divine and experience inner tranquility and joy.
The key aspect of the Japji Sahib’s teachings on happiness is the concept of Naam Simran, or remembrance of the divine name. 1. Chanting the Mool Mantra: Connecting with the Divine Spark
The Japji begins with the Mool Mantra, a powerful verse that encapsulates the essence of God. Chanting this mantra has become a daily practice for me, a way to connect with the divine spark within myself and the universe. Initially, I felt disconnected and alone in my pursuit of happiness.
Learning: The Mool Mantra reminds me that I am not separate from the divine, that a part of God resides within me. This connection brings immense peace and a sense of belonging. By chanting the Mool Mantra, I center myself and find strength and solace in the presence of the divine, fostering a sense of well-being that contributes to my overall happiness.
2. Recognizing the Oneness of God (Ik Onkar):
The Japji emphasizes the concept of Ik Onkar, the oneness of God. It teaches us that all creation is interconnected and stems from the same divine source. Previously, I held prejudices and biases, creating unnecessary divisions in my life and hindering my happiness.
Learning: The Japji challenged me to see the oneness in all creation, to treat everyone with respect and compassion, regardless of their background or beliefs. This broadened perspective fostered a sense of unity and belonging, eliminating negativity and creating space for genuine happiness and connection with others.
3. Contentment through Acceptance and Gratitude (Santokh and Shukar):
The Japji highlights the importance of Santokh (contentment) and Shukar (gratitude) as essential elements for achieving happiness. Initially, I craved external validation and possessions, leading to a constant state of dissatisfaction.

By letting go of ego and embracing humility, I opened myself up to genuine connections, learning experiences, and a deeper sense of well-being. 5. Living with Purpose and Reciting Naam (Simran):
The Japji emphasizes the importance of living a purposeful life and the practice of Simran, which involves chanting the divine name of God. Initially, I felt lost and directionless, unsure of my purpose in life.
