How I Taught TO Balance Desire, Reason & Ego To My Son?
Ah, life. A tangled mess of desires, reason, and ego, wouldn’t you say, son? It took me a lifetime of stumbles and triumphs, my son ,to learn how to navigate this chaotic dance.
Here’s the wisdom I’ve gleaned, lessons etched in the lines on my face and the stories held within my heart.
Desire: The Untamed Stallion
Desire, that fiery steed, used to be my sole companion on life’s journey. It was all about chasing the next thrill, the next conquest. Remember that time I quit my stable job to chase a get-rich-quick scheme? Desire, the stallion, bolted with me, and reason, the rider, was nowhere to be found. Needless to say, we landed in a heaping mess.
“Desire is the key to motivation, but it must be tempered with wisdom,” as Lao Tzu once said. That wisdom, son, comes from reason.
Reason: The Steadfast Rider
So, I learned to rein in desire, to let reason take the reins. Calculations became my mantra, every decision meticulously mapped out like a chessboard. I climbed the corporate ladder steadily, my path lit by logic. Stable, yes, but a spark was missing. The thrill of the unknown, the joy of the unexpected – all sacrificed at the altar of reason.
As Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” I was creating a well-trodden path, son, but where was the adventure?
Ego: The Glaring Spotlight
Frustrated, I swung to the other end of the spectrum. Ego, that spotlight, roared to life. I craved recognition, accomplishments stacked like trophies. Deals closed, targets exceeded – I reveled in the applause. But soon, the applause turned hollow. Friendships became transactional, connections strained under the weight of my inflated ego.
“A healthy ego is necessary, but a bloated one is a recipe for disaster,” as my old mentor used to say. Ego can be a motivator, son, but when it blinds you to your flaws, it becomes a prison.
The Delicate Dance
It took a series of humbling experiences, son, to finally understand the key. It’s about balance, a harmonious dance between these three forces. Desire fuels the ambition, the fire in your belly. But reason acts as the guiding hand, ensuring you don’t get consumed by the flames. And ego? A healthy dose keeps you confident, but humility keeps you grounded, open to feedback and connection.
Think of it like this, son. Desire is the wind that fills the sails of your ship, propelling you forward. Reason is the sturdy captain, navigating the currents and charting the course. And ego? It’s the figurehead, proudly representing your journey, but always mindful of the vastness of the sea.
Life, son, is a continual learning process. You’ll stumble, you’ll get knocked down, but with each experience, you’ll refine this dance.
Desire will guide your passion, reason will illuminate your path, and ego will fuel your confidence – all working together to create a fulfilling journey.
Now, that’s a life worth living, wouldn’t you say?
